William Eggleston...

Picture
William Eggleston, born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Sumner Mississippi, was a photographer known for his photos of everyday objects in the mundane world. As a child, his interests were incredibly diverse, from piano to drawing to working with electronics. His affinity for visual media was obvious even at a very young age, when he enjoyed purchasing postcards and cutting pictures out of magazines. When he first began experimenting with photography, he shot his photos in black and white; it wasn't until he began teaching at Harvard between 1973 and 1974 that he discovered the process that enabled photos to be printed in color. Immediately he began working with dye-transfer printing. Eggleston was inspired by bringing attention to mundane objects or people we see on the street and casting them in a new light. He found beauty in the things that we tend to overlook as we go about out days. This is exactly why I was drawn to this artist. When I shoot my photos, I want to show others the beauty there is to be found in everyday objects. I want to make others notice the interesting and lovely things that they would ordinarily just walk by. In emulating his photos, I intend to focus on how I utilize color and what object I shoot, because color is incredibly important when taking a photo to attract attention, and it invokes interest when a picture is taken of very simple objects. Eggleston and I share a certain passion in our goal in creating photos that cause others to think and that is why I was especially drawn to him.
